I once had a female urologist at one of the nation’s leading clinics tell me to get up on the table, with no other instructions. She proceeded to unbuckle my belt and open my pants. There was no one else in the room. Was I surprised? Yes. Bothered? No. I guess military service and several hospitalizations took away my modesty.
When a nurse says, “We do this every day” etc., they are letting you know that they are not doing this for their enjoyment, only to expedite the exam or procedure.
During my last hospitalization, three nurses asked me to demonstrate my artificial urinary sphincter. So, one nurse held the urinal while I activated the valve in my scrotum. I did not have a problem with that, because it is important that medical personnel understand how they work. Inserting a foley without deactivating it would be disastrous.
Even then, it requires a juvenile foley. One gentleman posted online that he had the instructions tattooed on his abdomen because he was terrified of the possibilities.
Why do female nurses expect male patients to just drop their pants without a privacy sheet? It makes me so mad because male doctors/nurses would never treat a female patient that way.
