NEW on "Public Health is All of Us," the Multnomah County public health podcast: an interview with Rocio Gutierrez, Lead Nutritionist for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, (WIC). Gutierrez tells us about the WIC program and the grand opening of the new AVIVA clinic in the Rockwood neighborhood of east Portland. In 2025, Multnomah County’s WIC program served over twenty thousand people in four clinics, the largest and most diverse WIC client base in Oregon for the last 52 years. 🥑 Embracing Healthy Food Traditions at Multnomah East 🍲 The Community Health Worker (CHW) Program lifts up traditional cooking to inspire healthy cuisine and fellowship. 👥 "The initial idea was to bring together a group of Swahili speaking women and ask them what health topics would be most beneficial to them," says Sylvia Ness, Health Promotion Specialist Senior. The group wanted to learn more about heart health, stress, how to shop for food on a budget, and increasing physical activity. 💖 Mamie Zagabe, CHW at Mid County Health Center, continues, "Clients learn new recipes during class. And at the end of the class, participants are able to take home groceries as part of their homework to make the recipes and share with their families." Simple actions like changing your filters regularly, using portable air cleaners, and limiting indoor activities that produce smoke (like burning candles or frying food) can make a big difference.
