I run a dubbing studio.
Every day we make Korean, Turkish, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese content accessible to South African audiences through language.
Nobody asks why
Nobody says viewers should just learn Korean or Portuguese
Nobody complains when knowledge and entertainment are translated into English
I also write software in Python.
So when I see people building tools that allow coding concepts to be expressed in isiZulu, I understand exactly what theyโre trying to do and get excited
Language is not just for conversation.
Language is a vehicle for knowledge.
If a language can carry stories, science, mathematics and law, it can carry programming concepts too.
The comments under @Father_Of_Geeks post are a reminder that the biggest barrier is not technology.
Itโs whether we believe our own languages deserve a place in the future.
Growing up in South Africa, coding always felt like it belonged to someone else's language.

Pay is $6 p/h. But you will work for those peanuts! And they will hover over you to death. Those daily meetings before you start your shift - with cameras on. Those girls working there think it's their mothers company. What shite place to work for. Hong Kong based online school.

Also, Iโm not knocking anyoneโs hustle. The job market is cooked, so rather than wasting your time, try something else - VA work, data analysis, transcription, AI training, etc. Do something. There are always BPO companies from the US trying to exploit the South African remote work market. Figure it out. Not everything is going to work for you.

I can see why you TEFL-qualified (Level 5 diploma) teachers from ZA making R40kโR80k a month remotely, especially those of y'all who've been in the game before COVID. That program was no joke. I did mine through a Korean university, & it was so hectic. But so worth it! ๐ค
