There’s a lot we have already learned from the pandemic that needs to be a part of our #healthcare system from now on, like the use of #teledentistry, mobile dentistry, and efforts to support a broader workforce. #EthicsChat (1/2)
More than 56 million Americans live in areas with a shortage of dental professionals. Tools like telehealth and teledentistry can also provide an opportunity for care in underserved areas: bit.ly/3ISSC3q#EthicsChat (2/2)
Q9: Private practice dentists are more likely to be in larger, higher-income communities. What are ways to incentivize dentists and physicians to practice in regions of highest need?#EthicsChat
We need to think beyond the clinical setting to community-based care to underserved communities. This includes the use of a broader #healthcare workforce to include community health workers, dental therapists, nurses, physician assistants and others. #EthicsChat (1/2)
Q9: Private practice dentists are more likely to be in larger, higher-income communities. What are ways to incentivize dentists and physicians to practice in regions of highest need?#EthicsChat
There is a greater focus on community care and meeting patients where they are, and medical-dental integration is a big part of that work. We must continue to innovate and place prevention at the center of our #healthcare system. #EthicsChat
Q8: Twenty years ago, US Surgeon General David Satcher said, “You cannot be healthy without oral health.” How has oral health practice trends changed since then to respond to this remark? #EthicsChat
More and more insurers are realizing #oralhealth care is part of whole-person health. Our work is to continue to show the value of centering patient-centered outcomes in policies. #EthicsChat
Q7: Speaking of #Medicare & #Medicaid, dental health has been viewed as nonessential by insurers. Which changes should be prioritized to promote dental care as key to health and wellness? #EthicsChat
They explain: "Value-based approaches to health care need to unify mouth care with general medical care, motivate medical-dental interprofessional practice, promote oral disease prevention, and support restorative dental care" #EthicsChat
In @JournalofEthics, my @CareQuestInst colleagues & I talk abt policy, practice, & research solutions to address these gaps. In 2015, 1 in 3 US adults had no form of dental benefits. We need comprehensive adult dental for #Medicare & #Medicaid: bit.ly/3HktrWU#EthicsChat
Q6: #HealthEquity seems most unattainable in minoritized communities with less wealth. How might mental/dental gaps be addressed in these communities? #EthicsChat
"Dental caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood, although it is largely preventable. Caries incurs short- and long-term negative health effects and can diminish both children’s and parents’ quality of life."
We need a value-based #oralhealth system. My @CareQuestInst colleagues wrote a great article on oral health over the lifespan using data from more than 31 million Medicaid claims & 45 million commercial or Medicare supplemental claims: bit.ly/3Hj3AyC#EthicsChat
Q5: Pediatricians who implemented dental care with their patients improved those children’s overall dental health over time. What should be next steps for making this standard practice? #EthicsChat
I think this may be in large part attributed to the medical-dental divide between professional practice and education of medicine and dentistry. This divide has been long-lasting in the US is the source of an often fractured practice model, one that not whole. #EthicsChat
