Did you know Montgomery County, NC has a gold mine? A nice chat with a patron this morning led us to a 1910 map of Eldorado Township on our NC Maps site, go.unc.edu/NCmaps. The map shows properties by landowner including the Crump Gold Mine. go.unc.edu/Eldorado

Many changes in NC cartography over the past 200 years. 100 counties today, 62 in 1822; revised spellings (Pittsborough to Pittsboro); disappearance of place names on earlier NC maps--i.e. Haywoodsboro, Tindalsville.
