The Government has put patient safety at risk in North Devon, with their decision to delay the promised rebuild of North Devon District Hospital until 2035.
I absolutely will not give up in this battle (as the Health Secretary knows personally) - and I hammered home the scale of the danger North Devon faces again today in Parliament.
The last Conservative Government badly let down North Devon with false promises without any funding, and now Labour will deliver the money a decade too late.
Our hospital is mainland England’s most remote, and the cracks in its ageing infrastructure, the outdated main theatres and Intensive Care Unit, put the viability of critical care in jeopardy. Neglecting those problems today will have a ripple effect on the entire Devon healthcare system tomorrow. Yet now, the New Hospital Programme Review has kicked the issue squarely into the long grass.
I intend to take Wes Streeting MP up on his offer - and show Health Ministers NDDH myself if I must. They must publish an assessment of the impact that these delays will mean for people here in North Devon. NHS patients deserve transparency and honesty.
I won’t give up. I’ll keep fighting this tooth and nail every day for the hospital upgrade we so desperately need.
