Food security goes beyond growing crops to preserving them, adding value, and reducing waste. Yet across Nigeria, post-harvest losses continue to limit the full potential of our agricultural produce. Innovations, such as the development of a process plant for plantain flour, are transforming this reality by turning a highly perishable crop into a stable, market-ready product, extending shelf life, boosting income opportunities, and strengthening the food value chain. In 2022, Sessan Ayodeji and Emmanuel Olatomilola were recognized with The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation for this impactful breakthrough, highlighting how technology and ingenuity can reshape local industries. Today, we look back and celebrate innovations that not only feed nations but also create sustainable pathways for economic growth and food security #TheNigeriaprizeforscienceandinnovation #Pastwinnnersspotlight #TheNigeriaPrizes2026

From farm to table, the journey matters just as much as the feast. Thanks to innovations like “Gains in grain yield of released maize cultivars under drought and well-watered conditions,” The story of our staples is getting a powerful upgrade. Maize production is being transformed with improved resilience, enhanced quality, and greater value across the entire agricultural chain. It is no surprise that this groundbreaking work by Shehu Ado and Muhyideen Oyekunle clinched The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation in 2022. Step into their story and see how science is cultivating Nigeria’s future one kernel at a time. #TheNigeriaPrizes2026 #TheNigeriaPrizeforscienceandinnovation2026

The race is on. The Nigeria Prizes Secretariat officially handed over the entries received for the 2026 cycle of The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation to the Advisory Board, setting the stage for what we expect will be another fiercely contested edition. With a total of 237 entries received this year, the highest since the inception of the prize in 2004, the judges will now commence the adjudication process. At the handover yesterday in Lagos, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations & Sustainable Development, NLNG, said that the Prize remains a platform for identifying solutions with real-world relevance. Which work will emerge at the top? Watch this space for more updates. #TheNigeriaPrizeforScienceandInnovation #TheNigeriaPrizes2026

Not everything that changes the world comes in a loud announcement. Some of it starts quietly, in labs, in late-night thinking, in “what if this actually works?” Then one day, it improves the lives of people. That’s the kind of story behind these innovations. Here are 3 Innovations you didn’t know have won The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation. #TheNigeriaPrizes2026 #TheNigeriaPrizeforScienceandInnovation #NPSI
