The Latin noun ‘suffragium’ means ‘a vote’, and is at the root of English ‘suffrage’, ‘the right to vote’. In 1906, The Daily Mail coined the term ‘suffragette’ to belittle women fighting for that right, but they wore it with pride. ‘Vote’ comes from Latin ‘votum’, a solemn vow.
