New Hampshire was one of the first colonies to be settled, with the first permanent European settlement established at Odiorne's Point in 1623, and was named after Hampshire County in England by Captain John Mason in 1629. The colony became a leader in the fight for independence, being the first to declare independence from Great Britain on January 5, 1776βnearly six months before the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independenceβand ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788 as the ninth state. Known as the Granite State, New Hampshire played a significant role in early American industry and was a center of abolitionism through the mid-19th century.

Really enjoyed my time at @SaintAnselm College with the @NHFRW for their Friday with a Focus.
Had a great discussion about helping our veterans and the complex issues surrounding a full service VA hospital in the Granite State. #nhpolitics#nh01

On this day in 2003, the Old Man of the Mountain fell.
23 years later, he remains a New Hampshire icon and holds wonderful memories for so many Granite Staters.
