Why The Maddison Sessions Matter
“The Maddison Sessions (TMS) isn’t just education, it’s a reminder of why we do this work.” ~ the voices from the Police Officers, Crowns, Analysts and Safety Network coordinators who attended.

ALERT’s recent seizure of more than 500,000 child sexual exploitation files in Okotoks, Alberta shows the massive scale of this crime.
At the press conference announcing this horrific violation of children’s rights in Canada, law enforcement members’ eyes welled up with tears.
The Supreme Court’s 2020 Friesen decision was clear: sentences for sexual offences against children must condemn the profound damage caused and help deter future offenders.
However, the 2025 Senneville decision removed the one-year mandatory minimum for possession and accessing this material, creating more uncertainty in sentencing. Bill C-16 (focused on child protection and trafficking) is at third reading in the House of Commons. It has not yet passed the Senate or received Royal Assent. The bill includes positive steps such as making trafficking-linked murders first-degree murder and improving court supports for victims.
Our most vulnerable children deserve full protection and real consequences for offenders. There is still time to raise your voice and sign the #NotInMyCity petition.

At #NIMC, we’re honored to partner with Lifted because we know mental health matters deeply in the fight against human trafficking. When our kids are mentally healthy, supported, and empowered, they are far less vulnerable to exploitation.

📍 In 2025, 4,598 people were reported missing in Calgary. Most children & youth are found quickly, often within hours. All children and youth who were reported missing last year were located. While this is encouraging, every missing child represents a dangerous situation & every second counts.
🔎 Youth (aged 12-17) made up 50% of all missing person reports
🔎 Children (aged 11 & under) made up 5.5% of all missing person reports
🔎 33% of children were located where they went missing from (ie. returned home) & 16% were found within 500m
🔎 58% of youth were located where they went missing from
