ALT The statement from the Secretary of State Hilary Benn reads as follows: Nothing can justify the violence that we saw on the streets of Northern Ireland last night with masked thugs trying to burn and intimidate people out of their homes. Those organising these protests claim they're doing so to protect communities. In fact, they're doing the very opposite. They are damaging communities and hurting people who are innocent, and who have been terrified by what they have been through last night. It is utterly shameful, and it needs to stop now.

ALT The statement from the Prime Minister reads as follows: The findings of the recent Springhill Inquest into the tragic deaths in July 1972 of Fr. Noel Fitzpatrick, Patrick Butler, Margaret Gargan, David McCafferty, and John Dougal are sobering. While the circumstances in which the events occurred were undoubtedly challenging, it is the duty of the state to hold itself to the highest standard. The Government accepts and deeply regrets these findings and recognises their gravity. On behalf of the Government, I want to apologise unreservedly to the families for what happened and for the grief and trauma that they have endured since the tragic deaths of their loved ones.
