How it started —> how it’s going.
Tomorrow I’m attempting a 50 Mile ultra marathon in the Arctic circle. 😬 😁
7 months ago, I had a my entire colon removed for ulcerative colitis, and had a permanent Stoma made (an ileostomy). 💩
I put this surgery off for >5 years, as I wasn’t sure if I would be to be able to run again, gym again or anything I enjoyed. 🏃
Searching the internet for people that had tried similar feats was slim pickings. It usually showed horror stories of hernias, leaks, surgery complications, malnutrition and severe dehydration due to the large bowels usual role in absorbing water. 💧
So I’m posting this as inspiration, for anyone else out there is on a similar journey to me, who knows that surgery is an option but has been putting it off for the same reasons. There are highs and lows but know it gets better. 😊
An estimated 1/300 people in the UK have a stoma, many many of whom are doing incredible things. 💪
I don’t even know if I’ll finish this race within the time limits, however I’ll give it a bloody good go. 🤷♂️
