The part of Carpasian Rd. between Empire Ave. and Circular Rd. was known as "Johnny Dwyer's Hill." I've often wondered who Johnny Dwyer was. Turns out he was born in St. Johns, in 1847 and died in 1882 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the world heavyweight boxing champion. #newfoundland

On Jan 2 1942, this RCAF Digby departed Gander on an anti-submarine patrol. Shortly after takeoff the starboard engine malfunctioned. Unable to maintain altitude the crew attempted a forced landing on the water in Freshwater Bay near Dover. Locals later towed the aircraft ashore.

Most of us are familiar with the trans-Atlantic cable brought ashore in Heart's Content on July 27, 1866 but I've never seen what the actual cable looked like until now. #newfoundland

Merry Christmas from "Newfoundland History in Colour." You'll have to forgive the typical mispronunciation of "Newfoundland". I guess Santa is not a Newfoundlander.
