Sometimes the hardest thing to do is nothing. A mama raccoon left her baby on our property. It was so hard not to pick it up, feed it, and make it family. But that would have been the absolute worst thing to do to a wild animal. Keep wild things wild. #wildlife.

End of Watch: Phoebe the Service Dog 🐾 This is an end of watch final salute 🫡 for my service dog, Phoebe. She spent 12 out of her 15.5 years of life serving two veterans. Initially, when I became so debilitated by health complications after surviving a traumatic brain injury and a broken back while in the Army Phoebe was my furry caregiver. At the time, I was using a walker and a full-time caregiver. Phoebe performed household tasks, like unloading laundry from the dryer and pulling a laundry basket wherever I needed it to go. Reminding me when to take medication, and providing doggy hugs when I needed comfort. She learned to alert me when I was going to temporarily lose my vision so that I could take medicine and get somewhere safe. Once when I lost my vision, Phoebe returned me safely home from 2 miles away. As my health improved, Phoebe became one of my favorite adventure buddies. I think being out on the ice during ice fishing season, cross country skiing, or just sitting by the river on our homestead, were her happy places. Later, she adopted Matthew as her comfort human and became his service dog too. Phoebe passed peacefully of old age yesterday in the loving arms of us who loved her most. This American dingo, yellow lab mix was such an escape artist. No crate or closed door could hold her. Fortunately, her training kept her in check and will behaved. I will miss her expressive face, warm eyes, endless love, devotion, and loyalty. My heart is beyond broken today. But she will live forever in my heart. 🐾 ❤️ I love you old girl. You’ve earned the right to rest easy my little hero. Please help me send her off with a final salute of gratitude for her service. 🙏🏾🇺🇸🪖🫡 EndOfWatch #ServiceDog #ForeverInMyHeart #GoodGirl

Foraging isn't just about gathering food; it's a nervous system reset skill that requires respect for nature. Here are five essential rules to get you started: 1. Always positively identify a plant with at least two reliable sources before eating it. 2. Harvest sustainably, never take more than one-third of a wild population. We need to think about future generations while foraging! 3. Know your lookalikes! Some plants like wild carrot and poison hemlock can look similar. Educate yourself before you harvest. 4. Start with easy plants like dandelions and stinging nettles, which have distinct features and few dangerous lookalikes. 5. Remember to cook what needs to be cooked.
