Sub here in LA this morning. Events like this stress the need of inspections, a way to monitor for issues live, and proper settings on relays to detect and clear faults. Even with all this events like this can still happen but likelihood and impact are substantially reduced.

When lines ice up βΒ like they did in southwestern Manitoba this week β we have a number of ways to clean it off. This is what ice melting looks like. We create a short, the line heats up, and the ice falls off. Crews in the icy southwest will be de-icing this weekend. Drive safe!

I have a feeling we will be both amazed and disappointed in the power grid as temperatures continue to drop across the country. Particularly here in the south. πs we dont see another ERCOT repeat and for all the linemen and engineers working to keep the electrons flowing.
