The longest serving general in U.S. history, Winfield Scott was born #OTD in 1786 in Petersburg, Virginia. The hero of the Mexican-American War & the planner of the early Union strategy in the Civil War, Scott was honored with an equestrian statue on 16th street in 1874. #WashingtonDC

With a vote for independence likely, #OTD in 1776, the Continental Congress formed the "Committee of Five" to draft a declaration announcing the birth of our nation. Thomas Jefferson served as the primary author. All members of the committee are carved into the front of the Jefferson Memorial. #WashingtonDC #Freedom250

You could say they nailed it. (And also sanded it, painted it, and rebuilt it.) @NatlParkService staff from across the country are working hard to make DC safe and beautiful, installing and repairing more than 1,000 benches this year. Their work may happen behind the scenes, but the results are on display every day in the shared spaces that help to tell our nation’s story. 🇺🇸

As we continue our series on the Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence, let's meet the four signers from Connecticut. Roger Sherman, Samuel Huntington, William Williams, and Oliver Wolcott represented the "Constitution State" and pledged their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honor" to the cause of the American Revolution. #Freedom250

The three signers from New Hampshire honored at the Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence are Josiah Bartlett, William Whipple, and Matthew Thornton. Bartlett was the first delegate to vote for independence and the second signer after John Hancock. A merchant before the Revolution, Whipple signed the Declaration and then served as a general in the New Hampshire militia. Thornton did not arrive in Philadelphia until November 1776 but insisted on adding his signature so he could have the “privilege to be hanged for patriotism.” #Freedom250

Today is World Ocean Day! You might not think of the ocean when you think of #WashingtonDC, but the Potomac River - which flows along the National Mall - rises and falls with the tides and connects our city to the Atlantic Ocean. #WorldOceanDay

When walking around the National Mall, please remember to drink plenty of water and eat snacks. We recommend drinking at least one cup of water every 15 minutes and taking regular breaks inside or in the shade. The sun is typically strongest between 10am and 4pm and #WashingtonDC humidity levels can make it feel even hotter. We want everyone to have a safe & enjoyable visit.

A major turning point of World War II, the Battle of Midway began #OTD in 1942. With a combination of skill, determination, intelligence and luck, the U.S. Navy earned a decisive victory over the Japanese in the Pacific. We remember those who fought and fell at the World War II Memorial.

At the Memorial to the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence, New Jersey’s signers help reveal the broader story of the American Revolution and the people who shaped it. Representing educators, writers, farmers, lawyers, and ministers, the varied perspectives of Richard Stockton, John Witherspoon, Francis Hopkinson, John Hart, and Abraham Clark brought strength and wisdom to our young nation. #Freedom250

June is Great Outdoors Month! Between the National Mall and circles, squares, lesser known memorials, and parks around town, we manage over 1,000 acres of park land in #WashingtonDC. Stretching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial and down to Hains Point, the Mall offers so much public space to get outside and explore.

On this day in 1922, 50,000 people gathered on the National Mall for the opening and dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Two million people tuned in over the radio. This summer, a new part of the memorial will open to the public in time for America’s 250th celebration. The Lincoln Memorial undercroft shares a previously unseen space beneath one of the National Mall’s most iconic monuments. Visitors can step into the cavernous structural chamber, long hidden since the memorial’s opening, to see the massive concrete foundations that support the monument. Interactive exhibits inside explore both the memorial’s construction and its enduring legacy. Find more information about how to visit at nps.gov/linc.

The three signers of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia - Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton – took their places in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 1, 1776, just in time to give the colony’s support for independence from the British Empire. Welcome news back home, the citizens of Savannah performed a funeral procession and symbolically “buried” the Royal Government. #Freedom250

All gave some. Some gave all. Honoring all the members of our armed forces who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of devotion," Memorial Day is one of the most important and solemn days on the National Mall. #WashingtonDC

This weekend is more than a three-day break or the unofficial start of summer. It's a time to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to our country. National memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial offer space to gather, mourn and honor the fallen. As we enjoy the freedoms they protected, may we also take time to honor those who made it possible. Photo by @nationalmallnps

Four fountains. One unforgettable week. As America counts down to her 250th Anniversary, history isn’t just remembered — it’s flowing again. This week’s ribbon cuttings at the Taras Shevchenko Memorial, General Philip Sheridan Circle, Dupont Circle and Meridian Hill Park marked a triumphant return, with fountains and statues sparkling and waters flowing once again, each one a celebration of history, community, and beauty restored. This is President Trump’s vision in action. Through the Making DC Safe & Beautiful, we are restoring the heart of our nation’s capital and putting America on the path to having the most beautiful capital city in the world. We couldn’t be more grateful. Thanks to the National Park Service experts for their care of our national spaces. And here’s to the water flowing again. #MakingDCBeautiful #America250
