The politics of Malimawa has destroyed the social fabric in several ways. It has completely destroyed suspicion, anger, jealousy, and the valuable quality called democratic political discourse.
Today in Sri Lanka you can’t even present an opinion that disagrees with the government. A few months ago they would comment with profanity and send the most obscene threats in Inbox.
But today it has even come to the point of coming to your house to threaten you.
The worst thing is the amount of money paid by the government, the party, and businessmen connected to it.
In the past, doing politics on social media was a beautiful thing. I remember how we used to have political discussions on Facebook when we were building Pohottuwa.
I wrote a lot. When I ran for the Municipal Council, people recognized me because of the things I wrote. Even though there were a lot of opposing views in the comments, there weren’t the profanity and threats like what Malimawa posts today.
