Today is Mega-Monday for EU enlargement.
First, Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since the decision to start EU accession negotiations in 2023.
We will also close two more chapters with Montenegro, bringing it close to half of all chapters closed.
It’s a day to celebrate. I’ll also use today to urge candidates to continue the pace of reforms.

Intra-EU goods trade is worth more than €4 trillion, and for around 85% of EU member states, their largest goods trading partner is another EU country.
The EU is in a full expansion phase: Ukraine and Moldova are moving toward membership, while Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo remain inside the Western Balkans accession process.
As well as the potential future integration of the UK and Canada.
The acceleration of common capital markets, a shared European energy system and deeper military coordination is already underway.
The EU will become a single financial, regulatory and military bloc, governed by democratic rules and international law.

I strongly welcome the news that all EU Member States have agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.
On Monday, I will represent Ireland at the first Intergovernmental Conference, where we will open the cluster on fundamentals.

On Monday, Ukraine and Moldova will take their biggest step since opening EU accession negotiations in 2023.
Congratulations to both countries for their dedication and devotion to the European path.
Tonight’s decision by Member States to give the green light to opening the fundamentals cluster gives new impetus to ongoing negotiations.
This is truly a moment to celebrate. And a time to roll up our sleeves and work even harder.

Ireland has one of the lowest rates of unemployment in Europe and - importantly - unemployment among those who did not complete secondary education is similar to that who completed a degree. That's very different elsewhere in the EU. Excellent social equality and fairness 🇮🇪👍
