In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%.
While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired.

Adam McNamara will send the Ontario Science Centre the $522,500 required to keep it open for 2024. All those summer children’s programs will not need to be cancelled/relocated. All those staff won’t be laid off or displaced at the 11th hour.
I’m retweeting this because I would like to see this happen. (And I know Adam, and I know he is serious.)

Let’s not forget the equity lens here. Many racialized populations present earlier, with more aggressive disease. This is a wholesale disservice to those women, and an embarrassment. @CARadiologists @oarinfo @densebreastscdn @cantaskforce
@oarinfo calls for @cantaskforce to be disbanded. The CTFPHC has failed to provide clear leadership to Canadian women ages 40-49.
The failure to recognise the importance of screening at age 40 in saving the lives of 400 women each year and sparing hundreds more women from having to undergo preventable chemotherapy and mastectomies.
Early screening saves lives, results in less aggressive life-altering treatments and will save money.

UPDATE: The Canadian Cancer Society is updating its position on breast screening to reflect evolving evidence and calls for action from patients who are frustrated that many women aged 40 to 49 are being excluded from breast screening as well as the national guidelines developed by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.
We’re urging provinces and territories to lower the start age for breast screening programs to 40 for individuals at an average risk of developing breast cancer. Many provinces and territories have taken steps to expand access to this age group, and we applaud those actions.
Access to breast screening is important to find breast cancer early when chances of successful treatment are better.

Great article by Dr. Neil Isaac on the impact of race on breast cancer risk.
Through the Ford Government's leadership, breast cancer screening has been lowered to age 40 in Ontario. Saskatchewan and New Brunswick have since followed our lead!
