All of the systems, structures and focus in our society (and yes, the UK and Europe are just as bad as the US, we're just less heavily armed) prioritise white lives over those of people of colour. If you don't believe that, you have not been paying attention.
We need to state, explicitly, that black lives matter because, until we do and we ALL believe it and act on it, all lives are not mattering equally.
If you believe all lives matter, saying black lives matter should not be controversial.
