👷Our engineers often find great crested newts around the railway
🦎We want to help these endangered amphibians, but sometimes it means weeks of delays to key projects
We're working on a new way to protect newts without the extra delay, find out more 👉 gloo.to/FGjU

ALT A photo of a pair of tamping trains at Willesden on the West Coast Main Line - Tamping machines restore the line and level of the track and we use them after work to alter or renew sections of track. They insert large tools called tines into the ballast – the stones beneath the track – and then force the tines together to move ballast under the sleepers. The tamping machine moves additional ballast under the sleepers to raise the height of the track and can move the track sideways if required.
