Mangroves provide ecosystem services but are threatened by anthropogenic activities. Dabalà et al. show that biodiversity can be protected whilst maximising ecosystem benefits, with little or no increase in the protected area required. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

[1/4] I am extremely happy to share our latest paper published in @NatureCommunications: “Priority areas to protect mangroves and maximise ecosystem services”. Here, we show the benefits of incorporating ecosystem services in protected areas design. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

[1/5] Late to the party because I was busy proofing the typeset version… but here it is! After ~1.5 years of work, we’ve finally published our research: "A metric-based framework for climate-smart conservation planning" in @ESAApplications doi.org/10.1002/eap.2852

Very happy to finally see this out in @NeuroImage_EiC! It was a fantastic experience to observe how @RegReports really enforce thinking about all the intricacies of a research project before starting the data acquisition. Also, big kudos to the team @neuroMADLAB 🙌
Our stage 2 Registered Report on brain signaling dynamics after vagus nerve stimulation has been published @NeuroImage_EiC now. We found that tVNS increases BOLD responses in the NTS and a simple block model fits best. Work led by @glassybrain sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

(6) In sum, we found an impaired segregation of functionally distinct signaling in the insula. This increased reliance on interoceptive signals linked to the anterior insula might contribute to the pathophysiology in depression. #OHBMx media.giphy.com/media/i7kT5F…

(5) Crucially, we found a greater similarity in FC profiles across insular subregions in depression which was specific to the insula and driven by the anterior insula. #OHBMx

(4) Patients suffering from depression showed less distinct FC profiles compared to healthy participants, indicative of less segregation. #OHBMx

(3) We calculated similarity (correlation) and density (shift function) for 6 insular subregions (anterior vs posterior) based on resting-state fMRI in N=850. A greater similarity in functional connectivity (FC) profiles would then indicate a loss of segregation. #OHBMx

(2) Distinct subregions for interoceptive and exteroceptive processing have been shown in the insula. So, if we measure the insula with fMRI at rest, can we find evidence for an impaired segregation between insular subregions in depression? #OHBMx

(1) Sensing their bodily state is often difficult for people with depression. Such imbalances in interoceptive vs exteroceptive processing have been associated with signaling in the insular cortex. But what makes the insula special? #OHBMx media.giphy.com/media/wkGmOr…

Do you want to learn about insular connectivity profiles in depression? Are you a scientist who desperately wants to attend a cool conference or just self-isolating at home and interested in some fancy science? Either way, join @glassybrain and me for our slot @OHBMequinoX
It's @OHBMequinoX tomorrow! So if you want to hear a tale on 850 rs-fMRI scans, a bunch of determined scientists, 6 regions of interest and 1 theory to put to the test, join me & @neuro_bird at 15:15 (UTC). There'll be brains @cornu_copiae @neuroMADLAB #OHBMx

Metabolic states guide effort, but what is the role of the vagus nerve in it? We show that non-invasive stimulation of vagal afferents boosts the vigor to work for rewards. Work fast to breakfast w/ @glassybrain @cornu_copiae et al. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor…
