All it does is teach resignation. Cry-it-out style sleep training simply conditions infants to stop signaling distress because no one responds. That’s de facto learned helplessness. Attachment research is clear thay consistent responsiveness early in life is how secure attachment forms. Intentionally ignoring a baby when you are their only source of safety pushes them toward anxious or avoidant attachment patterns that can persist for decades. Secure attachment is foundational to long-term mental and emotional health and resilience. You don’t get that by ignoring distress. You get it by responding to it, repeatedly, until regulation is internalized. If that’s too hard for you, then you shouldn’t be a parent. Parenting carries real responsibility and trying to shortcut that responsibility at the expense of a child’s nervous system is selfish, full stop.
