It explains that the electrocatalytic nitrogen reaction (NRR) is a promising new technology for ammonia production. The advances are that the reactants are water and nitrogen, and it uses protons rather than more expensive hydrogen. The challenges are the inhibition of the competing hydrogen evolution reaction and the activiation and cleavage of N2. This papers finds that CoFe-perovskite electrodes can be beneficial for electrocatalytic synthesis of NH3 in proton-conducting solid-oxide electrolyzer cells. It has a high NH3 synthesis rate, a high faradaic efficiency, and the reaction causes no damage to the microstructure.
