The Research and Innovation Excellence through gender equality: New Pathways (23.–24.10.) conference focuses on #equality in #science, #research & #innovation.
Fund individual academics, not PIs, ‘to stamp out sexual abuse’. My story from this week's #NewPathwaysHelsinki conference on gender equality in research and innovation bit.ly/2p38LA7
Finnish Minister of Science and Culture @KosonenHanna wrapping up #NewPathwaysHelsinki: "One of the main priorities of @EU2019fi is to enhance an innovation-led EU. We need all available resources on board, regardless of gender, ethnical background & sexual orientation."
#NewPathwaysHelsinki our main take-home message: it is all about collaboration. We need to work together, all academic fields, all sectors, to foster real change.Interdisciplinarity, intersectionality and inclusion fundamental values for real change. #EU2019FI@deusto
As we're approaching the end of the conference, it is a good moment to take a look back at the discussions we've had in Helsinki these past two days. What has been your main takeaway from the New Pathways conference? Tweet your answer with the #NewPathwaysHelsinki hashtag!
@NewPathways2019 main takeaway: addressing gender dimension in research is about improving research quality. Secondly, addressing intersectionality is a major challenge, no clearcut solutions.
I am asking myself how to realize a #cooperation model vs #competition in research at the time of crises. There are structural economical problems from which lack of solidarity descends. I would call for a strong EU action on the private research labour market @NewPathways2019
#Intersectionality is a methodological tool, and this is what remains to be understood about gender issues too: they give an important perspective on analyses on global economic and rights problems. It's not about women, it's about everybody @NewPathways2019
Angela Kocze @ceu ends the panel with strong words: In order to address the topic of #intersectionality, we need to redistribute power, hierarchies and representation. "Having this panel gives out a signal that we need to focus more on this topic." #NewPathwaysHelsinki#EU2019FI
Enjoying so much the inputs from Philomena Essed! Values for change in HE organisations: clear Social Justice Mission; foster collaboration, not competition; personal approach v. set of brains #NewPathwaysHelsinki#EU2019FI@GearingRoles@DeustoResearch@deusto
Philomena Essed @AntiochU: #Intersectionality is a good concept from a political perspective as people can’t be reduced to one dimension. It's also imprecise, the idea of various dimensions coming from various directions and meeting somewhere. "A whole person approach is needed."
#intersectionality in research and innovation - what and why? Angela Kocze comments that we need to change the approach to research, intersectionality is a concept and an analytical tool for identifying structures of power. #NewPathwaysHelsinki
Louise Morley @SussexUni very topical, highlighting the dangers of different opposed groups fighting while the mainstream flourishes. “We need coalitions not competition,” she says #NewPathwaysHelsinki
Angela Kocze @ceu: We need to look at how the system of power affects those who are marginalised. If we’re going to follow the same pace with #intersectionality that we’ve followed concerning gender & racial equality, the change is going to take forever. It's time to take action!
Philomena Essed, professor of critical race, gender and leadership studies at @AntiochU, says universities must redefine excellence; academia has become a cultural clone of organisations #newpathwayshelsinki
Technology can perpetuate and even amplify social patterns of injustice by consciously or unconsciously encoding human bias. Understanding underlying #intersectional discrimination structures in society can help develop more just and responsible technologies #NewPathwaysHelsinki
