The last daily Evening Standard went to print today. I’ll be hanging around for a few more weeks but the new look Standard will do just fine without an Arts Correspondent. It’s been an honour and a total delight for most of my almost decade in the job and I’ll miss it. 1/5

The day this arrives from eBay I discover Penguin have reissued it. Maybe it’s why it was so cheap? Are they reissuing more Fredric Brown? I hope so

One of the regrets of my working life was I was among a small group of arts corrs due to be taken around the Tate’s Hockney show by the man himself but it was cancelled at the last minute as jet lag (he’d just flown in from California) won the day.

I’m all for regionalism and all news is local etc but this does seem to undersell it somewhat?

That’s the resignation that’s done for Starmer surely?

I’m going to be gutted if you too both rate it and make me have to go back and read it again
Ha, exactly what I did. Can't go wrong with a robustly read ex-library copy for three quid

A lost classic of London crime fiction that will stay lost to me after I gave up less than halfway through its 500 pages. No light and shade and I couldn’t keep track of the huge cast of characters despite them being called things like Electric Freddy and Manchester Jim

At what point does a US reporter stand up and ask him if he has no sense of shame?
WOW -- Trump crashes out and cuts his interview with Welker short as she presses him on his lack of evidence for claiming elections are rigged "You're either crooked or you're stupid. Let's call it quits. Because I've had enough. Thank you darling," he tells her." "I traveled all the way to Wisconsin for this interview," she pleads.

Apparently there is a new version of Cape Fear coming out? That’s a remake of a remake of the original. I could swear some new books have been published since John D MacDonald wrote it in 1957!

Thanks to @ClothesinBooks for the recommendation. A brilliant read and not just for John Gotti as a political scientist on Jimmy Carter’s electoral weakness

I know this is an arts niche with everything going on in London atm but the absence of a Jewish museum in the city is appalling.

British politics in a nutshell. Doorstep issues are clean air zone and grooming gangs. As an aside I see AB favours Paul Smith
Well said @andy4makerfield . The CAZ was brought up on the doorsteps a couple of times over the BH weekend. It’s amazing how the actual facts of what you’ve done have been forgotten over the last few years.

A combination of big farmer hands, rugby leagues influence, Sellafield and Carlisle United is the magic mix.
fair play to this part of Cumbria for producing both England's World Cup back-up keepers, James Trafford and Dean Henderson, *and* WC2006 back-up Scott Carson. The Gipuzkoa of goalkeeping.

Isn’t the most surprising thing about someone shouting at Rachel Reeves on a garage forecourt that a member of the public recognised the Chancellor of the Exchequer?

This test would not work in UK journalism
When I was in J school, the ad kids held a press conference at the end of the year as a joint final. If the journalists ate the food, you failed.

What I don’t get about this Granta story is presumably they were happy despite no member of staff having spoken to the ‘winner’?

The brilliant thing about this is everyone involved was being paid. Every journalist will have a similar story when they do something ridiculous and realise ‘hang on a minute I get paid for this?’
Five-star story on How To Do Journalism from @HadleyFreeman in her Sunday Times column today. Trebles all round.
