The legacy of Mike Long lives on.
this is my personal mike long tale. it leaves out a bit of context of our first interaction at spotlight orlando in 2025. cheaters and scumbags and bigots do not belong in competitive magic. don't let them feel welcome.

Modern Faeries goes 5-0 for a Trophy! I was trying to build a midrange Merfolk deck and I slowly replaced all the Merfolk with Faeries until it was winning. R1 Boros Ponza 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️ R2 Ruby Storm 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️ R3 Boros Ponza 🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️ R4 Goryos Vengeance 🎯🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️ R5 Broodscale 🎯🧚‍♂️🧚‍♂️

They just banned the chase rare to $0. Make him open it in his next booster pack.

This is pretty messed up. As pointed out by Donato Giancola on FB, it seems the new printing of The One Ring is just a flipped cutout of a previous borderless printing (artist credit: Marta Nael) with the runes removed, then plopped onto a Dan Frazier background. 😡

I don’t care if I’m a Magic boomer. This is the most fun I’ve watched on coverage in a hot minute.
the largest premodern event to date is now streaming: twitch.tv/duresscrew

The final boss of MTG collections.
I’m saddened to announce that due to declining health I must let my MTG collection go. I have consigned 1000 graded and 5300 ungraded cards from Alpha to Revised to Kid Icarus on eBay tinyurl.com/Kid-Icarus-eBay I would like to thank the community for all the fun since 1994. Cheers!

This Merfolk is more of a flavor win than it is competitive.
A one mana Merfolk that can repeatedly cast Brainstorms, if you can afford to not attack with some fishes. More previews at mtgpreviews.com/SOS Source: magic.wizards.com/en/news/ma… 🎨: @MariMagny

MTG’s mana system is incredibly balanced. The frustration from getting mana screwed is balanced out by your opponent that thinks they won because they played like a pro.
Every TCG is going to have non-games. Non-games are the result of variance which is something TCG's need. Some people feel like Magic's non-games are worse because the variance comes from the mana system, so a MTG non-game is "you don't play you cards." In reality this is no more of a non-game than some Hearthstone card doing something random to kill you out of nowhere, but Magic takes more heat for it because it feels worse. It's basically the same concept as how in Commander you can Doom Blade your opponent's commander and it's fine, but if you counter it they get salty. The result is the same, but the Doom Blade gives you the illusion that you were actually making progress and doing something. It tricks you into thinking your decisions mattered, but really they didn't. Non-games in other TCG's do a better job of giving you this illusion, to tricking you into thinking that they aren't really non-games because you are taking game actions and doing things. But really they are the same as getting mana screwed.

Last week I was scrubbing out with Premodern Stiflenought. Today I got my first 5-0. This deck is a perfect blend of nuanced blue cards and I love learning it. R1 Braids🌊🍤🌊 R2 Orzhov Control🌊🌊 R3 Grow-a-tog🌊🍤🌊 R4 Red Sligh🍤🌊🌊 R5 Oath 🌊🍤🌊 But I couldn't do it without some help...

This comprehensive primer by @Lannynyny got me up to speed super fast and showed me some alternative options on how to build the deck. This was useful because I wasn't having luck with whatever I net decked. It also included some brief sideboard advice (particularly side out clunky cantrips vs aggro decks). I would highly recommend anyone starting the deck to go here: youtube.com/watch?v=YsjtzKc_… But I also absorbed a lot from a vod...

I watched this vod from @PiemontiAndrea who is an absolute wizard with this archetype. He helped me realize that Peek was trash and I needed more interaction in the form of Chain of Vapor. He displayed a lot of plays I wouldn't have thought about if I hadn't seen them like attacking with Dreadnought then playing a 2nd Dreadnought to give pseudo vigilance. It was a very helpful video: youtube.com/watch?v=VmmIDo59… Anyways, thanks to both these players for their help!
