your students are holding you accountable. your faculty and alumni are trying to do the same. it’s time to wake up and realize that there is no saving the reputations of those currently in charge. ateneans are trying to save the best of ateneo - and that does not include the negligent leaders who let this happen and the sloppy, outdated ‘professionals’ who have managed the situation since. ateneo belongs to more than a few, no matter how ‘chosen’ they believe themselves to be. listen to your students. give them back their university. x.com/mvn_dn/status/20665271…

‘WE APPEAL FOR GREATER CLARITY AND TRANSPARENCY FROM THE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION’ Members of the Ateneo Loyola Schools Faculty Association called for greater transparency from the Ateneo de Manila University administration following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili. “We are with you and the Ateneo community in grieving and praying over the tragic deaths of our students Rene Clert 'Bobet' Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili. We extend our deepest condolences to their families and to all who love them,” the group wrote in the letter posted on Facebook on Thursday following the university’s statement on June 11, 2026.

Listen to your own. Listen to your best. Practice what you taught them. Practice what they embody.
READ: Over 163 Ateneo faculty members called on the Ateneo administration to be more transparent and accountable following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili. In the statement released today, June 11, the educators questioned whether University regulations and due process were followed in the “team-building activity,” and they also sought clarification on whether parents and guardians had been informed, and what safety measures were in place. Moreover, they asked whether Head Coach Tab Baldwin and Team Manager Christopher Quimpo’s “leave” are equivalent to a preventive suspension, which they say is “standard operating procedure” in these cases. The faculty also pressed the administration to explain how it intends to conduct a “independent and impartial investigation” and what measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Loss of life (young life at that) brought about by avoidable circumstances that the victims were exposed to by authority figures that were supposed to care and nurture them - is a tragedy that requires accountability. No it won’t bring back Divine and Rene, but we cannot allow people in power to be protected when their authority and status were wielded to put young men in precarious situations that took their lives. There’s anecdotes on record of precedent, there’s a grieving mother asking for the most basic details amid official statements saying they are ‘working closely’ with the families. Investigate this to the fullest. Basketball is by no means more important than protecting our young people, most especially those who come from backgrounds that force them and their families to look at a roster spot, game minutes, a coaching staff’s favor and approval - as tickets to a better life. Pay close attention to who says what, if anything at all. If you’re not enraged by the avoidable accident that took the lives of two young men, if your instinct is to protect an institution’s reputation over condemning those responosible for two boys dying, if you would rather be silent because you’re worried about relationships or your place in the industry, then you’re part of the problem. This was avoidable. This was negligent. It’s only basketball, ffs. There are people responsible. Hold them accountable.

Both these teams have a couple of guys that im sure they’d love to play but would be better off if they didn’t. Whoever shortens their rotation sooner (and sticks to it) wins this series
