I do not remember exactly when, but I came across an NLP researcher from Japan (as I inferred from the name) on Twitter, and I followed him out of curiosity. Later, I heard that he was unwell. Since then, I quietly followed his updates and kept him in my thoughts.
Dear Friends, this is Masato's wife Lynn typing. It is with a heavy heart that I share that Masato passed away peacefully yesterday. Thank you for keeping him in your thoughts. You can follow this page for memorial details: caringbridge.org/site/b0895f…

Today, I heard the sad news of his passing. Although we never met in person, it was still a small but meaningful connection online. I would like to remember him always. May he rest in peace.

The W-NUT workshop focuses on language as it naturally occurs in the real world from noisy user-generated text to practical and impactful applications of large language models. We look forward to sharing the CfP soon, and we invite the AI and NLP researchers to participate.

TL;DR: I didn’t get to eat tacos. Too many people at every restaurant. I will be back next summer if possible.
