In courts from coast to coast, the only way a person can avoid accountability for their actions based on their mental health is to prove that they were legally insane. But in Lubbock, Texas, a billionaire backer and a warm, fuzzy letter from a shrink is apparently all you need.

A super majority of the Big 12 directors (schools) already have almost unlimited discretion to sanction Texas Tech. What’s more, they also have the authority to amend the Big 12 Bylaws at any time to specifically require the immediate suspension or dismissal of any school which knowingly plays an athlete who has admitted to placing bets on his own team.
I'm told Texas Tech would consider legal action if athletic programs and/or conferences try to exclude them from competition or hinder their scheduling.

Kirby Hocutt says integrity applies on more than one front. He is correct. The integrity of the sport requires that the rule against betting on your own team be enforced against players who bet on their own team. The integrity of the institution requires that the school not pay $4 million to a player it knew was under investigation for that conduct. The integrity of the rehabilitation narrative requires that the player not have continued betting after he transferred to Texas Tech in January. Texas Tech is invoking the integrity of how the school treats its players while the public record establishes the school recruited and paid a player whose betting history was already known. Pick a lane. Otherwise, Hocutt would like you to know that Texas Tech is not a party to the Sorsby lawsuit, did not file it, and did not fund it. He would also like you to know that Texas Tech is paying Sorsby $4 million for the season the lawsuit just made possible. These statements are both true. They are also incompatible in any reasonable reading of what it means to be a passive bystander in someone else's litigation. I am all about supporting people with additions. But this could not be more ugly. Sorsby is radioactive to every team in the NFL. The NFL is not drafting a player with 9,000 bets including 40 on his own team. The supplemental draft was always a fiction. The Texas Tech return is not Sorsby's preferred option but his only option, and the school's $4 million investment depends on him being on the field to justify the contract that was signed before the gambling history became public.

The bad faith here, the thing that's gross, is trying to slip in this insane idea that the only way Texas Tech can support Sorsby's fight against addiction is putting him on the field at QB. Strikes me as a mockery of mental illness for their own cynical ends

I can’t help but wonder whether the people advising Brenden Sorsby were really concerned about his mental health and well-being. Can you imagine being in a recovery program when almost every other post on “X” mentions you as the main villain in a story that has outraged virtually everyone in college sports? That would put a strain on anybody - even if they weren’t in a recovery program. The fact that Texas Tech hasn’t already unplugged Sorsby from this nightmare speaks volumes about whether they really give a rat’s ass about this young man’s mental health or what’s best for his future. Actions speak louder than words.
This is really well said. Sorsby shouldn’t play but it’s not as simple as “you’re off the team” if the coaches truly care about him and his well being. Happy compromise, he stays on the team. He gets the help, the scholarship, the money, practice. He just doesn’t play.

I asked @JayBilas what the argument is for Darius Acuff to be the #1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft: “He’s a walking bucket. Like the way he scores and how tough he is, he’s got those chest-down drives. He’s built differently than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but like those chest-down drives that those guys get, it reminded me a little bit of him. But, you know, you watch him in person and you’re like, ‘My God, who’s going to stop this guy?’ He’s scoring in the 30s, the 40s. And, you know, it’s just a stat, but, the first player to lead the SEC in scoring and assists, Maravich did it. That stands out. And in the SEC tournament, I mean, he was not good. He was great. And you’re thinking, how high is this ceiling going to be? And he’s really competitive because he was hurt. Like he played most of the year injured. He’d be in a boot during the week and then not really able to practice that much. And then he plays his tail off in the games. Really, really impressive.”

Since the turnover stat has been tracked, there’s only been three individual games in NCAA history in which a freshman posted 18 points 10 assist, and zero turnovers. Acuff Jr has done it twice in the last 7 games. #HistoricNumbers
