I would prefer to chart some sort of middle path between nihilistic self hatred and patriotic "socialism." Perhaps some sort of identity based around ones economic position in relation to capital. Has anyone thought of this before?
something the left needs to sincerely grapple with is that the vast majority of workers in this country identify as american before anything else. i personally think it’s in our best interest to channel a positive vision for this country

Shang refers to merchants in ancient China's four occupations (士农工商) a theoretical ranking of professions scholars farmers artisans merchants. This was not a hereditary caste system like India's. Social mobility was possible and China has no caste system today.
