Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. What is it that you are most grateful for today?

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s important for each of us to remember that even though we live in turbulent times, there’s a lot of good all around us. Luckily, here in Vermont, you don’t have to look too far to find it. I want to wish everyone a safe, and happy Thanksgiving.

One of the many things I love about Vermont is the sense of community and neighbors helping neighbors. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to spend some time at Casella’s annual Wheels for Warmth. What an incredible event that helps keep Vermonters safe on our roads and warm in their homes during the winter. A strong showing from the Rutland County delegation and @GovPhilScott!

Burlington is on the brink. The current situation has been years in the making at the hands of the city’s mayor and its city council. Citizens and businesses are pleading for help — when will Burlington’s leaders answer their cries and address this public safety crisis? Vermont spends the second most per pupil in the country when it comes to education. In 2015, Vermont was roughly 10 percentage points over the national average on key metrics. In 2022, we were at or close to the national average and fell below other New England states.

In January I outlined my vision for this session which included an education transformation plan so our kids get a better education at a rate taxpayers can afford. I still believe there's a path forward for education transformation that most agree is needed.

We are hopeful that tonight will be the last night of the legislative session. However, conference committees on both education and housing have not met consensus and we are expecting a late night. We must be willing to stay until the work is done, and must be done right!

Today, we honor the brave men and women whose lives were cut short protecting and defending the rights and independence of this great country.

We are clearly at a crossroads: we can make bold change and give our schools and taxpayers a better path, or we can yet again kick can, forcing these same budget cuts and rising taxes year after year.
