I don't thnk many gamers are actually upset that there is a female protag.
I think many fans of the franchise are struggling to articulate a feeling that the studio is starting to target a different audience than them, as well as people arguing that's a good thing.

This game takes place in afterlife of the gods called the Everywhen where the blood thirsty gods from multiple mythologies are at war for the land.
