3/ Why not just let Claude read your Markdown files directly?
Because the MCP server understands how NotePlan works. Task syntax, scheduling, frontmatter, calendar notes, Spaces. When Claude edits your notes through MCP, it doesn't break anything.
And it's safe.

2/ MCP lets Claude talk directly to NotePlan on your Mac. No copy-pasting, no switching apps. Just tell Claude what you want:
"What's on my schedule today?"
"Add a task to tomorrow: call the dentist at 3pm"
"Show me all open tasks tagged #urgent"

My choice is NotePlan @NotePlanApp for 2026. It was a good 5 year run with Things (which I still love but I needed a deeper set of features).
Some of the best to do list apps (Things, Structured...) are from German developers. Not a coincidence.

I’d say it’s one of the best esp. for Mac/iOS:
- Daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/yearly notes (a SUPER unique feature that I haven’t seen in other apps in this space)
- Written natively for macOS (not Electron) but has a web version for collaboration
- Super active development

Just discovered that @NotePlanApp has a Linear Calendar that gives you an overview of the whole year. It makes it so easy to visualize multi-day events.
