Shit on blockchains all you want, but they're one of the only networked systems were "hostile takeover by a rich ideologue" is a very unlikely failure mode.
When users run replicas of the system state, and the system state can fork, then *users* decide what's legitimate.

PoW is fundamentally more decentralized and censorship-resistant than PoS. With PoW, cheap energy is the strongest determining factor in participating in transaction selection. With PoS, wealth is the determining factor. Cheap energy is far more distributed than wealth.
