I think it's less about intelligence and more about expectations. A lot of Indonesian horror audiences grew up with horror that's built around ghosts, jump scares, and clear explanations.
Kenapa kritik backrooms dari orang indo kebanyakan "gajelas, ga dikasih tau secara gamblang maksudnya apa" Sementara dari foreigners menurut mereka pesannya itu terlalu tersurat/spoonfed ke audiens ?

So when a movie like Backrooms relies on atmosphere, symbolism, and ambiguity, some people end up calling it confusing or pointless because it doesn't hand them all the answers.

Couldn't sleep, so I went out for some fresh air at dawn and this nonchalant cat is the first soul I encounter.

Sedih ya. Cuma ingin menyampaikan aspirasi, tapi diperlakukan seolah ancaman. Funny how those who constantly preach about listening to the people seem to fear the people's voices the most.
kita dicegat. didorong. mereka ga memperbolehkan kita masuk ke Bundaran samsek karena “mengganggu aktivitas masyarakat”. Emang kita mahasiswa apaan? Pisang ambon???

Hey Asa, I actually just finished it this night. It’s honestly really hard to sit with. I went in not knowing what to expect, but it ended up being way more unsettling than I thought. But in the end, I kind of came to the conclusion that it’s about how easily a woman’s “no” gets—

labeled as madness, and how quickly her body becomes something that others decide for her.

Hi! I can't really give a full review since I haven't finished it either, but so far it's been a pretty uncomfortable read for me. The way the author portrays the characters feels very raw and unsettling, none of them are particularly easy to like, and sometimes their actions—

and thoughts just leave me staring at the page. There's also a strong sense of patriarchy throughout the story, especially in how the female protagonist is viewed and treated by the people around her.

I'm only halfway through, so I can't really say if it's good or not yet. But basically, it's about a woman who decides to become vegetarian after a series of horrific dreams, and everyone around her reacts very badly.

It's less about vegetarianism itself and more about bodily autonomy, family dynamics, and societal expectations. So far, it's been a pretty uncomfortable read, but in an intriguing way.

After watching Hokum, I finally got back into horror.

It makes me want to rewatch Caveat and probably add Oddity to my watchlist.
