Ambitious climate action requires us to work together, and that's what we saw in 2022 when construction broke ground at Toronto Western Hospital on the world's largest raw wastewater energy transfer (WET) system.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to see how far we've come, and over the next 30 years the WET system will generate thermal energy from nearby city wastewater to meet up to 90 per cent of the hospital's heating and cooling needs, reducing the use of existing electric and natural gas systems and significantly reducing the site's GHG emissions.
This project is unique to Toronto, contributes to our economy, and provides
@UHN with an opportunity to test samples of wastewater, opening a variety of health research opportunities.
