1 in 10 prisoners who attend A&E leave before they are seen or treated – double the proportion for people outside prison.
🏥 Our new report looks at why prisoners end up in A&E and when it could be avoided with better care outside of hospital:

ALT Chart showing the five most common reasons people in prison attend A&E. In descending order these are: injury; chest pain; abdominal pain; substance misuse; and seizure. Aside from abdominal pain, the share of each reason as a proportion of all reasons for attendance is greater for people in prison than for people in the general population.
When prisoners don't get consistent care for their health problems, A&E services have to fill in the gaps.
