Daredevil fans, I invite you to vote for the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ debut album as one of the Top Albums of 1973 on Sirius. You’ll need to write in this choice, but it’s very easy. blog.siriusxm.com/classic-vi…

This morning, a book order went out to Leigh on Sea, England, occasioning me to look it up. Leigh on Sea is a coastal town east of London, 4226 miles away from me in St Louis. My English readers have generally been OG Ozark Mountain Daredevil fans who saw the band on tour /1

… in the UK in the mid-70s or they are the children of those fans and grew up with OMD music in the home. The number and variety of international pressings of Daredevil albums and singles prompted me to write a chapter in The Ozark Mountain Daredevils on Record about it. /2

Dec 31, 1980 — The Ozark Mountain Daredevils reunited the six founding members for concerts, one in Springfield and one (heard here) in Kansas City. Rhythm and Joy—The 1980 Reunion Concert came out on CD & DVD on Varèse Vintage in 2006. It’s well worth seeking out.

It was the first time in 4 years that all the original members performed together, Randle Chowning & Buddy Brayfield having departed in 1976. New guitarist Terry Wilson and longtime partner Steve Canaday were also in the mix with Steve Cash, John Dillon, Supe Granda, & Larry Lee.

JOHN DILLON, founding member of the OMD, in Columbia, Missouri, in September 2019. In concert, you find him moving from guitar to mouthbow to fiddle and singing lead and background vocals. Dillon is the writer or co-writer of many of the Daredevils’ best loved songs /1

A short list of John Dillon-penned (or co-written) tunes — “Standin’ on a Rock,” “Beauty in the River,” “Keep on Churnin’,” “You Made It Right,” “Noah,” “If You Wanna Get to Heaven” … so many great songs. Pictured here is an ad from 1972 in the Springfield News-Leader. /2

“If I Only Knew,” composed and sung by Larry Lee, was the first single to be released from the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ The Car Over the Lake Album in autumn 1975. “If I only knew what wakes me If I only knew Then I would be outside walkin' Through the morning dew with you”

Quality & first impressions matter! I just received a new, independently published music memoir direct from the artist for $25 $10 postage and am dismayed. The book was dropped into an envelope wrapped in a piece of *typing paper* and sent at media mail rate of about $3.50. /1

Unsurprisingly, the book arrived with a ding on the cover and spine — maybe not bad enough to send it back but it isn’t pretty. I won’t name names, but the artist has had a substantial career in professional music and is a published author. Not good enough! /2

The Daredevils put on a spirited concert Saturday night at Woldwood Springs Lodge in Steelville. It was a sold out one-night-only event, and the Dares, who have performed more in 2023 than they have in 30 years, sounded like a band that’s sure of itself and having fun. /1

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils played two sets for over two hours of music drawn mostly from the A&M years though a few of the recent cuts like “No Way Out” and the new “More Cowbell” (with loud audience participation) were included. The deep cuts were many. /2

I enjoyed meeting Daredevil fans and seeing familiar faces. I sold a few books, too, although the Wi-Fi was out at the lodge and I could do only cash sales. I have copies left signed by John Dillon & Supe Granda. Order now! /3 omdonrecord.com #WildwoodSpringsEternal

Wildwood Springs Lodge 11-04-2023. It may look modest but in a few hours, when the lights dim and the room fills with the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and Daredevil fans and OMD music, this place will transform and it becomes something unforgettable.

Tonight, it’s the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ annual show at Wildwood Springs Lodge in Steelville, MO, where they’ve performed annually since 2006. Here’s SUPE GRANDA wearing his Wildwood shirt. I look forward to seeing OMD fans at the Lodge — always a memorable concert.

The HigLeeWils — from left, David Wilson, Larry Lee, and Emily Higgins — at the Focal Point in St Louis (2019). Highly talented acoustic trio. Larry Lee went back to his Ozark Mountain Daredevil days and sang newer material, too.

It’s suddenly cold here in the Midwest, so let’s dial back to summertime — a hot July 4th in 2014 @ Forest Park in St Louis. “Southern Cross” is the song they were performing when I snapped this shot. The Daredevils have a long history of playing on or around July 4 in STL.

Summer 2014 was a good one for the band. In August, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils performed at the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival in Springfield, Missouri. The concert was streamed online and provides excellent video of the latter day OMD.
