The new report from our Global Council on Inequality, AIDS and Epidemics, includes a key recommendation that the Global Coalition on Regional Production of Vaccines, championed by Brazil, could play an important role here, and that the international financial institutions should be encouraged to finance it. As @padilhando, Minister of Health 🇧🇷 notes, this not only saves lives, but also saves money, future health costs.

My urgent call is that Lenacapavir must not become another breakthrough that goes out only after a decade to those who need it most. At @UNAIDS, we've been working to support governments to prepare and push for fair pricing and faster access. We've challenged industry, convened partners, and worked alongside civil society to keep people at the centre. @UNAIDS_ZAF

In 2023, Africa received $72 billion in aid—yet lost $88 billion to illicit financial flows (mainly tax avoidance) and repaid $101 billion in debt to mostly Global North creditors. A perverse net outflow. A structural injustice.
To #EndPoverty, we need debt, tax & IP justice—and a new, solidarity-based model of development.
We are in a global crisis. We can resolve it through global solidarity. Now is the time for global public investment.

On today's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, remember:
💥 Poverty, like inequality, is a political choice. 💥
Right now a handful of the super rich are reshaping our world — undermining democracy and blocking fair tax systems.
Unfair and outdated systems of tax, debt, and intellectual property deny millions of people in developing countries, life-saving health & HIV services.
In a world of plenty, we should not need to choose between health, prosperity and security.
If governments cooperate to build a fairer world economy — by cracking down on tax abuse, relieving the crushing burden of debt and treating lifesaving innovations as global public goods — we can pull global solidarity back from the brink and save lives.

There was overwhelming strong support from PCB members & observers for @UNAIDS’ mandate as well as our ongoing transformation. Their statements filled us with hope, and it is reassuring to see our partners’ continued commitment to #endAIDS as a public health threat. I echoed my heartfelt thanks, as our Board members and observers also expressed strong solidarity with, and appreciation of, the staff of the @UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS. 🙏🏾 🙏🏾

This week, we successfully concluded the Special Session of the @UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB). I am pleased to share that the Board reached consensus on important decisions related to our revised operating model and #UN80 and that the workplan & budget for 2026 was approved by the Board.
