Couple of hours this morning on my favourite Sussex beach – which is rapidly being eroded by the sea to give strong ‘Planet of the Apes’ vibes - yielded finds ranging from a nice piece of a Roman Black Burnished Ware bowl, c140-250 AD, to a 1980s Golden Wonder crisp packet 😁

That’s an insane amount of ordnance to find in just one month, 108 years after the end of WW1. Eighteen tons!
Iron harvest figures for January 2026 “The month of January was a good start to the year. We had a total of 191 requests and approximately 18 tons of ammunition were found. Have you found ammunition? Stay away, call the police and DOVO will do the rest!” 📸 DOVO Sedee #IronHarvest

My neighbours’ cat often does this, sometimes in the middle of the floor. I’ve never seen such behaviour before. Any theories?

Erm, except that no.1 is not currently lived in, and certainly not by anyone called ‘Jim’. But it was clearly too much trouble for the @DPD_UKHelp24 driver to knock at the correct address, no.2, you know, THE ONE THAT IS LITERALLY ATTACHED AND HAS A MASSIVE ‘2’ ON THE FRONT.

Anyone else had a letter like this recently? I’ve had two, for my Landy and Volvo (both correctly insured), respectively. Response from my broker in the comments. It would be interesting to hear how widespread this issue is.

Went for a stroll on my favourite Sussex beach this eve. Found lots of prehistoric material here last year due to rapid erosion but today this solitary sherd was my only reward. Very coarse fabric, hand formed rather than wheel thrown, so I’m guessing Late Bronze Age 1200-500 BC.

…and in glorious close-up. My mate Bill, who lives locally, has recovered literally thousands of artefacts here over the last 25 years, including a complete Roman funerary urn (X-rayed at Fishbourne to reveal partial remains of a young female).

Hearing on the news that the British Army is at its lowest manpower since the Napoleonic Wars reminds me of the C17th? blanket box I bought a few years ago that had been lined with old handwritten records. Impossible to read until…

…I photographed them and enlarged them in Photoshop. They are dated 5 December 1796 and are local militia recruitment lists, stating who was eligible, who was exempt, and their occupations. Presumably this was a reaction to fears that the upstart Boney might invade England.

Sadly, the location that the lists refer to is missing, but I was told by the dealer I bought the box from that it came out of an old country house in Childswickham, near Broadway in the Cotswolds.

Hat tip to whichever props guy chose a 4x4 AMC Eagle Coupe as set dressing in movie The Order, set in the Idaho boondocks in 1983. Outstanding work. And yes, that is a moustachioed Jude Law on the right, playing a veteran FBI agent.
