OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FEDERATION PRESS STATEMENT Democracy Worth Defending, Akume Declares Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume (CON), has declared that Nigeria's democracy is worth defending despite challenges confronting the nation's electoral and governance systems. Speaking on Thursday at a public lecture held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Senator Akume urged Nigerians to play active roles in strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding the country's hard-earned civil rule. Reflecting on Nigeria's democratic journey since the return to civilian governance in 1999, the SGF described the past 27 years as a period marked by resilience, determination and significant progress. According to him, the country has successfully conducted eight consecutive general elections and witnessed peaceful transfers of power across political parties and regions, including a historic transition from a ruling party to the opposition. While acknowledging the gains of democratic governance, Akume said Nigeria must confront lingering challenges threatening the credibility of its democratic process. He identified electoral integrity as a major concern, stressing that allegations of corruption within the electoral system continue to undermine public confidence. "Democracy is not merely the act of voting; it is the guarantee that every vote counts equally," he stated. The SGF highlighted achievements recorded under democratic rule, including economic expansion, improved financial inclusion and investments in critical infrastructure such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway. He also pointed to reforms in the power sector and expanded access to education and healthcare through initiatives such as the Universal Basic Education programme, the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Akume, however, cautioned against allowing ethnic, religious and regional divisions to weaken the country's democratic foundations, even as he called for a sincere assessment of Nigeria's democratic experience, urging citizens and institutions to interrogate their performance in meeting the aspirations of the people. Describing the theme of the lecture, "27 Years of Democratic Governance: Achievements, Challenges and the Road Ahead," as an opportunity for national reflection, the SGF challenged Nigerians to envision the kind of democracy they desire over the next 27 years. "Nigeria is worth all our sacrifices and our democracy is worth defending," Akume said. "The present and upcoming generations are standing on the shoulders of those who struggled for civil rule, and they have both the responsibility and the opportunity to build the nation our founding fathers envisioned and which our children deserve to inherit", Akume noted. PRESS STATEMENT Democracy Day: FG Defends Tinubu's Reforms, says Nigeria on Path to Recovery The Federal Government has defended the economic and social reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu's administration, insisting that Nigeria is on the path to recovery despite prevailing hardship and security challenges. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume (CON), who addressed a national press conference on Tuesday to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, said available economic indicators showed that the country's fortunes were improving under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Senator Akume said the Tinubu administration remained committed to delivering on its promises as it approached the 2027 general elections, stressing that the government would seek "a revalidation of our mandate" from Nigerians. According to him, Nigeria's economy has recorded steady growth, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanding by 4.07 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026. While acknowledging that inflation and insecurity continue to affect citizens, the SGF maintained that the government's reforms were beginning to produce tangible results. "Government will never claim that every challenge has been solved," he said. "Inflation has been painful, though it is on a downward trend. Insecurity still threatens lives and livelihoods, but evidence shows that the country is moving in the right direction." Akume described the Democracy Day briefing as part of the administration's commitment to accountability, saying June 12 symbolises both the sacrifices that birthed democratic rule and the responsibility of elected leaders to improve citizens' welfare. He congratulated Nigerians for sustaining 27 uninterrupted years of democratic governance, describing the feat as one of the longest democratic experiences on the African continent. Highlighting some of the administration's achievements, the SGF said over three million vulnerable households had benefited from the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, while nearly one million Nigerians had accessed support under various government credit schemes. He disclosed that the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CreditCorp) had disbursed N37 billion in consumer loans, with more than half of the beneficiaries obtaining formal credit for the first time. On education, Akume said the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) had supported more than 1.058 million students since the implementation of the Student Loan Act, with over N184 billion released for tuition and upkeep allowances. He added that the administration had expanded access to healthcare through the National Health Insurance Authority framework and increased funding for primary healthcare facilities across the country. The SGF also touted the government's anti-corruption drive, noting that proceeds recovered by anti-graft agencies had strengthened public interventions, including the transfer of more than N50 billion in recovered assets to support NELFUND. According to him, Nigeria's removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list in October 2025 reflected the impact of reforms in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing. On security, Akume said the Federal Government was investing heavily in military capabilities and regional cooperation to combat terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities. He, however, urged citizens to complement government efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious movements to security agencies. "We can say clearly that institutional responses are being sharpened, coordination is improving, and reforms are continuing because peace and civic order are foundations of democratic progress," he stated.

The SGF further called for national unity and religious tolerance, saying diversity should be harnessed as a democratic strength rather than a source of division. He said: "As we go into the cycle for the 2027 general elections, our responsibility is to finish what we commenced in 2023 and scale what is working. "Our task is not completed yet and, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, more dividends will be delivered." The press conference formed part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, with ministers expected to provide detailed briefings on achievements recorded in their respective sectors. PRESS STATEMENT Tinubu Directs MDAs to Embrace Technology as 38 Ministries Adopt E-Workflow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that 38 ministries and extra-ministerial departments have now transitioned to a secure paperless workflow system, even as he declared that Nigeria’s civil service was undergoing a major digital transformation. Speaking while declaring open the International Civil Service Conference 2026 in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu said the era of “manual inefficiency” in government operations must come to an end as the country pushes for a faster, technology-driven and more accountable public service. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, the President said the reforms carried out under his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda were beginning to yield measurable results, noting that the civil service had moved “from aspiration to execution, and from execution to measurable impact.” According to him, the adoption of end-to-end electronic workflow systems across dozens of ministries signals Nigeria’s determination to build a modern bureaucracy capable of driving investment, innovation and inclusive growth. “When we spoke of digitalisation in 2025, some may have considered it an ambition for the distant future. Today, with 38 Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments operating on a secure, paperless and end-to-end electronic workflow system, we are sending a clear message: Nigeria is building a public service that enables progress,” he said. Tinubu directed all ministries, departments and agencies to deepen digital work processes and embrace technology in service delivery, insisting that public institutions must become more responsive to citizens’ needs. “The era of manual inefficiency must give way to a culture of speed, transparency, data-driven decision-making and citizen-centred service,” he stated. The President also revealed that the ongoing Personnel Audit and Skills Gap Analysis authorised by his administration was nearing completion, adding that government was identifying competency gaps and repositioning workers for 21st-century governance. Tinubu linked the reforms to the broader digital infrastructure agenda of his government, including Project BRIDGE — Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth — which he recently promoted at the Africa CEO Forum in Rwanda. He said Nigeria was opening up its digital infrastructure ecosystem to investors and development partners as part of efforts to boost jobs, innovation, connectivity and public sector efficiency. The President commended the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, for driving reforms under the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025. He particularly praised the integration of innovative tools such as Service-Wise GPT, describing it as evidence of what could be achieved through disciplined leadership and institutional commitment. Tinubu said the conference should serve as a “results laboratory” for deeper governance reforms, urging participants to focus on making reforms irreversible and strengthening accountability across public institutions. According to him, Digital Public Infrastructure has increasingly become a central pillar for national development and global competitiveness, noting that nations making significant progress in innovation, financial inclusion, digital governance, healthcare, education systems, and artificial intelligence are doing so on the strength of resilient digital ecosystems. "Digital identity systems, interoperable payment rails, trusted data exchange frameworks, and secure digital platforms are no longer optional national assets; they have become essential instruments of state capability and economic resilience," he stated. Dr. Kana particularly commended Galaxy Backbone alongside institutions such as the National Identity Management Commission and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System for their contributions to Nigeria's evolving Digital Public Infrastructure ecosystem and their support for the Federal Government's digital transformation agenda. He added that over the years, Galaxy Backbone has continued to demonstrate commitment to enabling secure digital infrastructure, supporting public sector modernization, and improving service delivery through technology-driven initiatives. Senator Akume stated that the Induction Programme was designed to deepen participants' understanding of emerging government policies, processes and procedures, while equipping them with the requisite knowledge to effectively discharge their mandates. He said that the Public Service remains the principal vehicle for policy implementation and service delivery in Nigeria, stressing that Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions were established to carry out specific functions within the framework of government policies and national priorities. He expressed concern over the increasing instances of conflicts and misunderstandings regarding the roles and responsibilities of Boards and Chief Executive Officers, noting that such situations have negatively affected productivity and institutional harmony in some agencies. The SGF explained that Governing Boards are responsible for providing policy direction and strategic oversight, while Chief Executive Officers are charged with the day-to-day administration and management of their respective institutions. Senator Akume emphasized that Governing Boards must operate within the limits of their statutory mandates and should refrain from direct involvement in daily administration. He further reminded Board Members that their responsibilities are primarily policy-oriented and oversight-driven. While urging Chairmen and Board Members to familiarize themselves with the enabling laws and operational guidelines governing their institutions, the SGF outlined the critical oversight responsibilities of Boards to include ensuring that the long-term interests of the Federal Government are protected, promoting sustainable and cost-effective institutional practices, strengthening internal controls and risk management systems, monitoring management performance and supporting strategic development initiatives.
