This Richardson County grower is getting his sprayer ready for an on-farm trial testing three different nitrogen rates. With fertilizer prices on the rise, heβs interested in seeing if he can cut back on N without sacrificing yield.
Using the UNL Nitrogen Calculator as a guide, weβre trying a few lower rate options to see how they perform this season. Stand count was done on the same study: manual stand count vs drone.Β #onfarmresearchππ± #growingresults

We placed water-sensitive cards in plots sprayed with the helicopter and drone to assess any differences in spray deposition.Β We also conducted disease ratings in the plots before and two weeks after fungicide application to determine if fungicide efficacy was affected byβ¦
the different spray platforms.Β Yield data will be collected at harvest to compare the helicopter, spray drone, and an untreated check. #onfarmresearchππ±
With on-farm research, we are always testing new ideas. Here, weβre running a trial for spot spraying by installing ground control points in the field and collecting drone imagery. This data will be processed to generate a prescription map.
We placed 1β, 3β, and 5β targets in the field, and based on the prescription, weβll later spray the area with water and use spray cards on the targets to evaluate spot-spray accuracy. This setup will then be replicated under real field conditions.
Drones can be utilized to take aerial imagery to determine crop stress, stand count, and fertility recommendations. They allow the flexibility of viewing entire fields in one snapshot all throughout the growing season! #onfarmresearchππ±
