Embarrassingly I've made a Substack for the semi-occasional times I fancy bleating on about publishing, and my job.
The first post is on People and Publishing, and my thinking about how we weigh up the business side of the industry with its authors...

With every Crispin Odey article I read, I think more and more about publishing’s open secret: the bestselling celebrity author whose despicable actions come up whenever 2 or more book people find themselves in the vicinity of a pub (🧵)
Right off the back of her inclusion in this year’s Global @Dazed 100 – *the* list of the buzziest names in culture right now – we are THRILLED that @ellen_atlanta's Pixel Flesh has been shortlisted for the 2024 Nero Award for Non-Fiction!

Yesterday, I threw a party to launch @AppleTreeLit.
I’m *so* unbelievably proud of my incredible authors. So many of them turned out, each as glorious and talented as the next.
Working for them, empowering them as people not products, is everything I’ve wanted to build here.
Hugest congrats to my brilliant, brilliant agent, @OneChapterMore , launching his own agency @AppleTreeLit. Did his gesticulations with a dangerously full glass of fizz, it was chic and wonderful and jaunty!

✍️ @khalida_popal
Khalida Popal is the founder and first captain of Afghanistan's women's football team. As a child, she fled Taliban rule with her family and grew up in a refugee camp in Pakistan. On her return to Afghanistan, football gave her and her teammates power, comradeship and freedom. But advocating for women's rights in sport put Popal's life increasingly at risk. This gripping memoir sheds light on the courage to fight in dark times.
In just over a week I’ll be in Amsterdam talking at G10 Festival. All the talks will be live-streamed, should the Netherlands be a bit of a stretch. It’s going to be a fascinating weekend. I’m honoured to be among these speakers. Hope you can join us!

Survivors: Hannah Durkin
Impeccably researched, this book allows readers to hear the voices of the survivors of the slave ship, reminding all how recently this abhorrent trade was still operating. Deeply moving

Do support this if you can. Influx Press is responsible for some of the best Indie publishing in recent years - they helped discover Eliza Clark, brought Percival Everett’s books back to the UK, and their taste is exceptional. They’re a necessary salve in the publishing landscape
For the past several months I’ve been trying to- and sadly not succeeding - to sell a challenging, but utterly superb, graphic novel memoir of the non-binary experience. It’s FUN HOME for the nb generation.

Up next we have a panel asking how we can keep the momentum going on the popularity of graphic novels, joining us are @KarrieFransman, @RuthMKnowles @RamzeeRawkz and James Spackman 🎨
See the thread below for insights from this session at #KidsConf 👇

It’s all well and good to keep up the popularity of graphic novels in the kids space, but if it doesn’t bleed into adult space, how does it help? Why is no one taking advantage of a generation being brought up on @AliceOseman’s Heartstopper, and publishing for them in their 20s?
Delighted that Sir Graham Brady’s KINGMAKER publishes today! It is, as The Telegraph rightly says, truly “explosive.” Whether you agree with his politics or not, no-one has had a more up-close-and-personal view of our recent politics than Graham. It’s a must read
Echoing @jeffvandermeer recommendation to buy @ride_trips excellent new book exploring the reality of modern life as ride-hailing platforms have taken advantage of the social contract to dominate the lives of millions of gig workers, which I reviewed for @BooksinFive below!
