While the Twitter API is non-functional for most 3rd-party clients, the Twitter API is still working for OpenCheck, for now.

Tweetbot and other clients are experiencing problems logging in to Twitter. We’ve reached out to Twitter for more details, but haven’t heard back.
We’re hoping this is just a temporary glitch and will let you know more as soon as we know more.

If you tried to register but you never got the verification email, I now have a simple solution for you: Just try to log in with that email. If you had a pending registration it will simply send you the verification email. Also, a few new features now and coming soon:

Identical source as the Firefox extension (except V3 manifest rather than V2). It also works as a Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey user script as well, if you prefer.

It requests the minimum set of permissions necessary. If you want to check identities but don't want to install the extension, just go to opencheck.is

Finally, note that on Mastodon a browser extension isn't necessary to validate identity, thanks to Mastodon's openness -- you can link to your OpenCheck public URL and because it links back with rel="me" it will turn green.

The system is bootstrapped off existing ORCID-authenticated accounts with verified publication histories along with Wikidata. A web-of-trust is being formed with a voting (now available) that currently looks like this:
