Across ancient Europe the great Oak was bound to some of the continent’s most powerful deities 🌳⚡
To the Norse it was sacred to Thor, in Greece and Rome to Zeus and Jupiter, whilst among the Slavic peoples it belonged to Perun...all gods of storm and lightning.
In Ireland, however the Oak was sacred to The Dagda of the Tuatha Dé Danann, a deity not so readily associated with thunder ⚡
Yet before battle with the Fomorians during the Battle of Moytura, the sorceress Brag threatened to bar The Dagda’s path by becoming a mighty Oak at every ford and mountain pass 🧙🏻🪄
The Dagda, however, replied that his axe would leave its mark upon every Oak forever and this could explain the deep furrows and scars etched into ancient Oak bark...or maybe The Dagda’s axe is the lightning that so often strikes these great trees and through time his assocation with the sky has been diminished ⌛
