After yesterday’s suspension of Claude’s Fable 5,
people are already turning to foreign open-source models.. mostly Chinese ones like DeepSeek, Qwen, etc. They’re strong, less censored, cheaper (or free to run locally), and just work.
Anthropic spent a lot of time calling their model dangerous, only to end up shipping it (even with super tight guardrails). Then one letter nuked access for millions of people.
Quite disappointing, but not surprising. A lot of people paid $200 subscription just to use Fable 5, and now they’re left with nothing.
What’s the next step for Anthropic here?
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.
The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance.
Access to all other Claude models is not affected.
We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible.
