“Of course, you know what ecumenism is; it is the heresy of heresies. It wants to completely wipe out the concept of the Orthodox Church as the guardian of the Truth, and to create some kind of new, strange church” - Metropolitan Philaret of NY

Matins Ode II for the Feast of St. Augustine: Having penetrated with faith that which is inaccessible to the corruptible mind, O father Augustine, thou didst clearly preach it; and thou didst thunder upon all the ends of the world, setting forth the greatness of dogmas... Matins Ode III for the Feast of St. Augustine: ...For the whole world proclaimeth thy corrections and struggles and hymneth the labors whereby thou didst toil in teaching, instructing and setting forth the divine doctrines which thou hadst imbibed. These words were commissioned by St. John Maximovitch, approved by the entire Synod of ROCOR, and sung by St. John every single year on St. Augustine's feast day. (Living tradition as of the 20th century).

"And if anyone does not think and say that Augustine is a saint and blessed, let him be anathema." "καὶ εἴ τις μὴ φρονεῖ καὶ λέγει τὸν Αὐγουστῖνον ἅγιον καὶ μακάριον εἶναι, ἀνάθεμα·" St. Gennadios Scholarios, De verbis patrum Latinorum de processu spiritus sancti

Metropolitan Philaret will go down in history as a confessor on the levels of Sts. Nicholas, Athanasius, Cyril, Photios the great, and Mark of Ephesus.

"Why is it that when you come to our Monastery you do not venerate me?" "Who are you?" "Saint Augustine", responded the Saint, and he disappeared from us.

"As soon as man says, 'I have sinned!' God forgives him immediately and overlooks his sins. How much did Blessed Augustine grieve that holy mother of his! Nevertheless, what sanctity and eros of God he attained later!" -Elder Ephraim of Arizona

A very similar thing could be said of those who deny the sanctity of Blessed Augustine!
"Those who oppose the reception of the relics of St. Edward and the very sanctity of the Saint would do well to consider that they are opposing the very grace of God Himself, for which sin the spiritual penalty will doubtless not be negligible" Metropolitan Philaret of NY

This is the AFR modernism that is in America. It’s a form of cheap and bad apologetics disconnected from the fathers.
St. Augustine was relying on a badly translated Latin version of the original Greek (Romans 5:12). The Eastern Orthodox never had that mistranslation as they used the Greek Bible, consequently they never had the heresies of Calvinism and Jansenism, nor the invented “limbo”.

* don’t go to services
The issue of modernism is also connected praxis. When people to go to services like Vespers and Matins they don’t get to hear the Theology of the Church. Most of the OCA sadly doesn’t follow the Russian practice of all All Night Vigil anymore.

It should be. Converts need to learn to get rid of the Protestant mentality of Sunday morning only. The same goes for feast days as well.
Does your priest make attending vigil mandatory for receiving communion on Sunday?

fr. Thomas Hopko also defends the odd practice of “female readers”. He basically defends it by saying it happens in GOARCH sometimes ancientfaith.com/podcasts/sp…

In a Winter's Pascha, Father Thomas Hopko stated that the Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary felt pain at the birth of Christ-God. This actually runs contrary to our hymnody and to the teachings of the Holy Fathers. "*IF* you point this out, however, or about Schmemann, Meyendorff, Ware, etc., then many American converts get highly upset - because this is all that they know of Orthodoxy." -- Father Aristibule Adams, ROCOR orthodoxinfo.com/phronema/re…
