Andrea Britta Maier (Aurich, Duitsland, 19 april 1978) is verouderingsonderzoeker en hoogleraar Gerontologie aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam en hoogleraar Interne geneeskunde - Geriatrie aan de University of Melbourne. Ook leidt zij het Centre for Healthy Longevity in Singapore. Maier is een dochter van een Oost-Duitse vader en een West-Duitse moeder die hij ontmoette in Sleeswijk-Holstein. Zij studeerde geneeskunde aan de Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg en Universiteit van Lübeck. Tijdens haar studie begon zij haar onderzoek naar veroudering. Zij specialiseerde in de interne geneeskunde aan het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum in Nederland en koos vervolgens de subspecialisatie Ouderengeneeskunde. Na haar studie en een summa cum laude promotie in 2008 werd Maier in 2012 hoofd van de sectie ouderengeneeskunde en gerontologie aan het VU Medisch Centrum. Op 33-jarige leeftijd werd zij benoemd tot hoogleraar Interne geneeskunde, in het bijzonder Gerontologie. Hiermee werd zij de jongste hoogleraar in de interne geneeskunde ooit in Nederland. Maar ondanks dat alles en het feit dat ze vloeiend Nederlands spreekt, komt ze niet in aanmerking voor het Nederlanderschap. Dat besliste de bestuursrechter afgelopen november in een beroepsprocedure die Andrea Maier aanspande tegen de staatssecretaris van Justitie & Veiligheid vanwege de afwijzing van haar naturalisatieverzoek. Onbegrijpelijk vindt ze het. "Ik ben volledig geïntegreerd in Nederland en voel me meer Nederlands dan Duits. Maar mijn internationale carrière zit mijn naturalisatie in de weg." Ze heeft niet voldaan aan twee voorwaarden die kunnen worden gesteld aan het verkrijgen van het Nederlanderschap, zo blijkt uit de uitspraak. Eén van die voorwaarden is dat de verzoeker voorafgaand aan het verzoek minimaal vijf jaar lang hoofdverblijf heeft gehad in Nederland. Ook is het mogelijk om genaturaliseerd te worden wanneer iemand minimaal drie jaar getrouwd is én onafgebroken samenwoont met een (en dezelfde) Nederlander. Bij het beoordelen van een verzoek wordt onder meer gekeken naar de inschrijving van de verzoeker (en de echtgenoot) in de Basis Registratie Personen. De 48-jarige Maier stond vanaf 2003 in de BRP ingeschreven en is sinds 2013 getrouwd met een Nederlandse man, die in een post op LinkedIn zijn verontwaardiging uitspreekt. Hij schrijft dat hij zich schaamt voor zijn eigen land. Wat voor Maier roet in het eten gooit, is dat ze zich in mei 2021 uitschreef uit de BRP. Maier: "Dit heeft te maken met mijn aanstelling aan een universiteit in Singapore, waar ik een deel van de tijd woon. Vanwege de regelgeving daar moest ik me in Nederland uitschrijven. Toen ik daarover sprak met de Nederlandse ambassadeur in Singapore, stelde die voor dat ik een naturalisatieverzoek zou doen." Door die uitschrijving oordeelde de staatssecretaris en nu ook de rechter dat het hoofdverblijf van Maier voorafgaand aan haar verzoek niet meer in Nederland was. Maar ook dat zij niet langer samenwoont met haar echtgenoot, die nog wel in de BRP staat. "Dat er sprake is van een gezamenlijk reispatroon van eiseres en haar echtgenoot en dat zij elkaar bezoeken zo vaak als hun werk dat toelaat, maakt dit niet anders", stelt de rechter, die vindt dat de staatssecretaris om die reden het naturalisatieverzoek terecht heeft afgewezen. Ook kan er geen uitzondering worden gemaakt voor Maier op basis van de zogenoemde hardheidsclausule. Die is volgens de rechter alleen bedoeld voor zeer bijzondere gevallen, bijvoorbeeld als een uitzondering in het staatsbelang is of om humanitaire redenen. Andrea Maier: "Ik vind het een heel hard oordeel van de rechter. Eigenlijk wordt ervan uitgegaan dat ik een schijnhuwelijk heb met mijn man en dat ik niet ben geïntegreerd in Nederland. Ik begrijp dat echt niet. Ik woon en werk al meer dan twintig jaar in Nederland, al is het dan nu een deel van de tijd."

Suddenly everybody on Twitter loves people with Down Syndrome so much and that couple who aborted their DS baby are devils. All of you condemning them: How many DS children have you raised? How many DS adults are you friends with / hang out with? How many DS people do you date? We all know the answer to these questions. 99% of the people sitting on their moral high horse neither care for people with Down Syndrome nor do they include them in their lives in any way. They have never gone to any orphanage to consider adopting a child with DS. They would never consider seriously being friends with or spending time with a person with DS. Some of them are even repulsed by people with DS but want to pretend they are saints when it’s time to condemn that couple. Why would any loving mother choose that fate for her child? Do you think mothers of children with DS are happy seeing their children being excluded and rejected, and never being able to live a full independent life? Let alone the fact that whenever a family with a disabled child breaks up, 9 times out of 10 the father abandons the mother with the disabled child and the woman becomes a lifelong hostage unable to live life because she has been enslaved to the endless care of her disabled child. On top of that she spends her entire life worrying who will care for her child after she dies and because of this worry some old women have even killed their disabled child and killed tnemselves out of despair and worry of what will happen to their child. So what was the point? After listening to wicked people at the time of pregnancy and not aborting, spending a lifetime caring for the child without respite, only to end up still killing the child because SURPRISE SURPRISE, none of those people who shamed you to not abort were willing to volunteer to help care for your disabled child to give you a break while you were young, or now that you’re too old and frail to continue. These people just want to see women as slaves in every unpleasant situation in the world, and as a woman you are the only say and the FINAL say on whether you give birth to a child or not, because when the suffering begins NONE OF THESE PEOPLE WILL EVER SUFFER WITH YOU.

From the perspective of a brother to a severely mentally retarded sister, it’s just not worth it. Nothing against her. But the reality is more horrifying than most people understand. In our particular case, she can’t feed, dress, wash herself. Can’t walk, or speak and needs 24/7 supervision. Not to mention the incredibly disruptive violent screaming tantrums. One just has to weather them out and try not to lose patience, whether they happen in public, or at Christmas dinner. You don’t bring friends or girlfriends home to that. You can’t even speak to each other across the table when that happens. Our lives were dominated by providing care in a hughly stressful environment. Late night trips to A&E. Endless treatments and medical consultations. My mother’s life is still dominated by it. Most people in these situations simply don’t have the resources, and live forever in subdued desperation. Actual life needs to take priority. I would not do that again, if I had a wife and other children, I would not put them through what I grew up with under any curcumstances. I would terminate the child’s life if they showed sighs of such disability. Jail would not deter me in putting first the needs of wife and children.
