The Port Authority is rolling out new measures under its $100 million Operation Legal Ride initiative to combat illegal ride solicitations at JFK, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia airports.
Introduced ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and other major international events expected to bring millions of visitors to the region, the comprehensive campaign includes:
• Increased deployment of Port Authority police and
@nyctaxi enforcement personnel
• New consequences for repeat offenders, including DMV license points and potential license suspension
• Streamlined prosecution efforts with agency partners
• Vehicle impounds and higher redemption fees imposed to recoup a fair share of the Port Authority’s enforcement costs
• New technology to identify repeat violators
• A multilingual awareness campaign across airport terminals, on flights, targeted social media, and digital advertising
"Hustlers target vulnerable travelers, first-time visitors, and non-English speakers. This multi-jurisdictional problem requires a multi-pronged solution, and that's exactly what we're proud to deliver today, working with our partners across the city and the state to bolster our efforts and end this dangerous practice." — Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia
Use only licensed and insured ground transportation providers! Avoid anyone offering unsolicited illegal rides!
